Costa Rica GPS Map App Reviews

Better than nothing, but...

Still lots of bugs, and a very primitive interface. Very far from the functionnality of a Tom Tom, but true, you dont pay the same price. I have been waiting a long time for a gps for Costa Rica on my iphone, rather than using a Garmin, I must say that this one needs lot more work...Developpers, a little more effort, keep on!

Usefull when we needed it even it would require ergonomics improvements but was usefull

Perhaps this gps is not like Google navigation or garmin, but two times it helps us to find our way when lost in non easy roads. Combined with a classical map, it was a nice help during our trip to costa rica, with an attractive price. You could improve centralized database with easier search on map or voice for directions. Good luck for improvements !

Nice help !

If you plan to drive in Costa Rica, you should get this app. Dont ask for too much but this will really help you not to get lost. Roads in Costa Rica are crap, no signs, … and a offline GPS is a must have. 3D is too slow used with iPhone 4S, 2D was fine.

NOK i loose 10€

You can not find the street you need, the ergonomics is poor, no way to memorized a favorite. I am using an iPhone 6

DOES NOT WORK

I downloaded and went to costa rica. The app does not calculate any route, does not show any location, does not work at all. Asked for my money back. It is a shame Apple allows such a bad quality app in app store.

Unusable

This app is unusable! Didnt work at all (neither on Iphone nor on ipad), got Stück everytime I strated the navigation, wrong street names in San José - just awful! Not worth any money - I want Mine back!!!

Useless

The app doesnt really work neither outside nor inside Costa Rica. It manages to localize you but doesnt direct. If it finally works, you see a blue line in a "map" that looks like drawn but without any sound. I had to buy a local SIM card and use google maps.

No use to navigate with a Car

Hello! I download this App to navigate in Costa Rica. It was no use because the localisation was to Slow. So i ended up using googlemaps Navigation. 8,99 € is too much.

Very slow!

Might work in rural areas without many streets but absolutely useless in San José!

top

top app, works fine and accurate on ipad4

Needs lots of work - must read

Im in Costa Rica - decided to download this down here instead of renting GPS from car rental place. Where do I start - the good - it works in that it shows your location on a squiggly line (aka - some road). Now the not so good - you HAVE to have a proper paper road map to use for reference because the GPS map doesnt show city / town names - and weakly shows highway numbers. Forget about any secondary roads - no names. The POIs are in the way and you cant turn them off. The application is hyper slow - scrolling or scaling is painful. Really, the only thing its good for right now is showing your location on a map that you then use the proper roadmap to figure out where to go. Tried putting in "Puerto Viejo" - a popular destination spot - but not in there. Lastly - the price - it KILLS me that I paid $20 for the thing. So unless the author addresses some issues with updates, I cant in good faith recommend this app as anything more than a map locator.

Slow

Like the others have said it is a horribly slow app. Version 2 didnt improve in this regard. Im using an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.2 so its not the slowest iPhone out there. I wish I could get my money back. I emailed the company raising the slowness issue back when it was version 1 and they told me to wait for version 2. Obviously the wait was not with it. Makes me suspect that this company is a scam.

Waste of money!!!

Dont even waste your time/money.... This doesnt track at all. It is a useless app. The only thing it does is put you on a poorly laid out map. No tracking, no POI info, save the $20. I wish I did!! Glad I had the ol map with me!!!!! Wanted to give it a zero star rating but couldnt!

Great alternative to the expensive GPS/Nav maps!

I used this app with my iphone 3GS when i was in very remote parts of Costa Rica, it worked great! The app could use more labels for roads and small towns but i guess thats a lot to ask when youre traveling in a country that doesnt bother with road signs! It gets updated with new features, label and POIs so it should continue to improve. The app did what it said, i got to my locations without getting lost and when i cross referenced the app with a conventional paper map it was very accurate. I would recommend this app to anyone looking for a budget GPS/Nav. Excellent alternative to the expensive GPS/Nav maps, price is acceptable but needs more labels for roads and towns, also need to speed up the operation as it was very slow to respond, not sure if its the remote locations, GPS chip or possible signal strength. I will use this app every time im in CR.

Pretty good if youre patient

I am currently in CR. First impression of app wasnt great. In taxi to San Jose hotel, loading hotel as destination for POI caused app to exit every time (La Rosa De America). I rebooted iPhone and ran app by itself, then it settled down. Has been working fairly well. Still may exit after choosing POI, but generally is OK. POI database needs more entries but its adequate for most tourists. Road database has many lesser roads but not the one our hotel was on. Navigation generally worked fine once the route stayed loaded. Will get better with some more work. Altitude would be nice to have in the mountains driving through the clouds. A week later ... Not as positive. Maps really need town names. Database needs more POIs. App needs to crash less. Went through Playa Jaco on trip from Monte Verde to Manuel Antonio and app tried to direct us off main highway through town roads then back onto highway. still pretty rough. Keep trying guys, it has potential. If I were starting another trip I would still use the app but you really need a paper map, a navigator and some common sense when interpreting the app directions. Not very useful

We just got back from 2 weeks in Costa Rica. This app was useful on a few occasions but had some serious problems and is not intuitive: 1. Roads and towns in app are like the real thing. They are not well labeled! it was frustrating to be in a small town and have to ask somebody where we were, or try to compare the pattern of roads in the app to a separate map because the towns were not labeled in the app. 2. The app would lock up or crash frequently. 3. Many roads were missing. This apps is no substitute for a GPS.

A waste of money

This app is about as useless as you know what!!! Never worked properly. Left me abandoned in the middle of San Jose. Route not showing, no navigation, everything at the bottom of the screen. A total waste of time and money. I was able to do better just following my nose.

Make an effort

They charge $9.00 for this app because they know they wont sell to many. Simply not usable. Save more time using a regular map. Get the word out.

Great value

Very handy for the price. Locals were quite impressed by it, and other travelers got it right away. Im a map geek, I have maps of everything, everywhere I go. Ive been to CR a dozen times, and this app was open most of the time while traveling thus time. Is if perfect? No- but its a very usable map and kept me from getting lost dozens of times, any one of which would have been worth the price AND doesnt use any cell data. I didnt use the 3-D map mode. Having the entire map driven by landmarks perfectly reflects Tico navigation and also lets you answer, "whats that thing over there?" Wish list: • more prominent placename labels • display search results by proximity or province/town • maybe use of colour for different map elements • a MOB button - maybe holding down the "Switch" icon on the main screen, to easily add a new location • having your own Added locations available in the Search menu - so you dont have to go to Edit Location to when you want to navigate to an added location. • river & lake labels

Useless

This GPS app is totally useless, if I had depended on it, I would still be floundering around in Costa Rice asking directions in English and trying to translate Spanish. Google Maps worked perfectly, however a data plan is necessary instead of a standalone GPS.
